Dr. Stephen Shalamanda brings advanced training and expertise in low vision rehabilitation and the management of ocular disease. He is known for his patient-focused approach and his dedication to improving both visual function and quality of life for his patients.
Dr. Shalamanda earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from The Pennsylvania State University and completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Throughout his education, he consistently received clinical honors, including recognition for excellence during his rotations. He received specialized training in Low Vision Rehabilitation at the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center in Philadelphia. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into both the Beta Sigma Kappa and Gold Key International Optometric Honor Societies. In addition, Dr. Shalamanda served as the Head Clinical Skills Teaching Assistant, helping train and mentor fellow optometry students.
Dr. Shalamanda’s clinical interests include comprehensive primary eye care with a special emphasis on post-operative refractive care, particularly the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). As a certified VisionLock™ Adjuster, he customizes patients’ vision following cataract surgery using advanced ultraviolet light treatments, allowing for exceptional precision and flexibility in achieving optimal visual outcomes tailored to each patient’s lifestyle and visual goals. He is also passionate about low vision rehabilitation, helping patients maximize functional vision and independence.
In addition, Dr. Shalamanda participates in the national InfantSEE® program, providing no-cost vision and eye health examinations for infants ages 6–12 months. He is actively involved in professional leadership and service as a member of the Berks County Optometric Society, the Pennsylvania Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. He also serves on the executive board of the Vision Resource Center of Berks County.
Dr. Shalamanda maintains strong ties to his home community in Schuylkill County, where he mentors students at Penn State University’s Schuylkill Campus, helping guide future healthcare professionals.
Dr. Shalamanda enjoys spending time outdoors golfing, fishing, and kayaking. He values time with his family, friends, and his wife, Abbie, and brings the same balance and dedication to his personal life that he brings to patient care.
