Pediatric Eye Care And Exams
Supporting Children’s Vision, Learning, and Healthy Development
Clear vision is essential for a child’s success—both in and out of the classroom. At Wyomissing Optometric Center, our pediatric eye exams go far beyond checking whether a child needs glasses. We evaluate how their eyes work, how they focus, and how effectively their visual system supports learning, reading, coordination, and overall development.
We provide comprehensive eye care for children of all ages—from infancy through late adolescence—and tailor each visit to the child’s comfort level and developmental stage.
Why Children Need Eye Exams
Many vision problems have no noticeable symptoms, and children may not know how to describe what they’re experiencing. Vision issues can appear as:
- Difficulty reading or paying attention
- Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
- Squinting or head tilting
- Complaints of headaches
- Poor hand–eye coordination
- Trouble seeing the board at school
Early detection is critical. When caught early, most childhood eye conditions can be corrected or effectively managed.
What We Evaluate During a Pediatric Eye Exam
1. Visual Acuity
We measure how clearly your child sees at distance and near—important for schoolwork, sports, and daily activities.
2. Eye Alignment & Teamwork
We assess whether the eyes work together properly, screening for issues such as:
- Strabismus (eye misalignment)
- Amblyopia (“lazy eye”)
- Eye teaming issues
- Depth perception problems
Early diagnosis ensures the best long-term outcomes.
3. Focusing Ability
Children rely heavily on their focusing system for reading, learning, and digital device use. We evaluate how well their eyes adjust between near and far distances.
4. Eye Health Evaluation
We examine the internal and external structures of the eye to identify conditions such as:
- Pediatric cataracts
- Infections or inflammation
- Corneal or retinal abnormalities
- Allergic eye conditions
- Effects of systemic conditions (e.g., diabetes)
5. Prescription for Glasses (If Needed)
If your child needs glasses, we provide an accurate prescription and help you choose comfortable, durable frames designed for active kids.
Special Considerations in Children’s Vision
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
We identify and manage amblyopia using evidence-based treatment plans that may include glasses, patching, or other doctor-directed strategies.
Strabismus (Eye Turn)
Early diagnosis helps prevent long-term vision loss. When necessary, we coordinate care with pediatric ophthalmologists.
Myopia (Nearsightedness) in Children
Myopia is increasing rapidly among school-aged children. We provide early detection and guidance on healthier visual habits, screen time recommendations, and long-term eye health.
When Should Children Have Eye Exams?
The American Optometric Association recommends:
- 6–12 months: Infant eye screening
- 3–5 years: Comprehensive preschool eye exam
- Before kindergarten: Full exam for school readiness
- Every year thereafter for school-aged children
- Children with symptoms, vision difficulties, or special healthcare needs may require more frequent monitoring.
