Advanced Diagnostics & Imaging

Precise Technology for Early Detection, Accurate Diagnosis & Better Eye Health Outcomes

At Wyomissing Optometric Center, we invest in advanced diagnostic technology to ensure every patient receives the highest standard of eye care. These tools allow our doctors to detect conditions earlier, track changes with precision, and create highly personalized treatment plans.

Today’s modern eye care extends far beyond a basic eye chart — and our imaging suite gives us a detailed view of your ocular health from the front surface of your eye to the deepest layers of the retina.

Why Advanced Diagnostics Matter

Many serious eye diseases begin without symptoms:

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Macular degeneration
  • Retinal tears or detachments
  • Inherited retinal disorders

Our advanced imaging suite allows us to:

  • Detect subtle changes years before vision is affected
  • Track disease progression with accuracy
  • Guide treatment decisions based on objective data
  • Provide detailed documentation for medical or surgical co-management

This technology ensures that nothing is missed — and that your care is truly personalized.

Our Diagnostic and Imaging Technologies

Below is a clear, patient-friendly overview of the advanced tools we use at Wyomissing Optometric Center.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

High-resolution 3D imaging of the retina and optic nerve

OCT creates detailed cross-sectional images of the retina—similar to an ultrasound but using light instead of sound. It helps us detect and monitor:

  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Macular holes and epiretinal membranes
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Inherited retinal disorders

OCT is quick, painless, and essential for modern retinal and optic nerve care.

Retinal Photography & Fundus Imaging

Digital retinal photographs allow us to evaluate and document:

  • Blood vessel health
  • Optic nerve appearance
  • Pigment changes or lesions
  • Signs of diabetes, hypertension, or cholesterol issues

These images create a visual record so we can monitor even the smallest changes year over year.

Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF)

Early detection of retinal stress and metabolic dysfunction

FAF imaging reveals changes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) before they are visible on routine examination. This technology is particularly important for:

  • Macular dystrophies
  • Stargardt disease
  • Best disease
  • Age-related macular degeneration

It helps our doctors recognize early patterns and track progression precisely.

Visual Field Testing (Perimetry)

Assessment of peripheral and functional vision

Visual field testing measures how well you see in all directions and is critical in diagnosing and monitoring:

  • Glaucoma
  • Neurological conditions
  • Stroke-related visual changes
  • Retinal dystrophies
  • Medication-related toxicity

This test provides valuable insight into how your visual system functions in daily life.

Anterior Segment Imaging

Detailed views of the cornea, iris, and lens

High-magnification imaging of the front of the eye helps diagnose:

  • Corneal scars
  • Dry eye disease
  • Keratitis
  • Cataracts
  • Contact lens-related issues

These images help guide treatment and evaluate progress over time.

Optos® Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging

200° view of the retina

Optos captures more than 80% of the retina in a single image, compared to roughly 15% with traditional retinal photography. This allows our doctors to see the far periphery of the retina with remarkable detail.

It is especially useful to document and monitor:

  • Retinal tears or detachments
  • Peripheral retinal degeneration
  • Diabetic changes
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Pigment or vascular abnormalities

Optos provides immediate, high-resolution images and helps us catch problems early — often before symptoms appear.

InflammaDry® Testing for Ocular Surface Inflammation

For patients with dry eye, this test detects elevated MMP-9 levels, an important marker of inflammation. It guides treatment decisions and helps us assess the severity of ocular surface disease.

Meibomian Gland Imaging

For patients with dry eye symptoms, oil gland imaging helps us identify:

  • Blocked meibomian glands
  • Gland dropout
  • Structural changes

This is essential for diagnosing and treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), one of the leading causes of dry eye.

How Advanced Diagnostics Support Your Care

Our imaging suite enhances every aspect of your visit:

  • More accurate diagnoses
  • Earlier identification of disease
  • Clear explanations supported by visual examples
  • Better tracking of long-term changes
  • Stronger medical and surgical co-management

We believe patients deserve clarity and confidence — and our technology ensures no detail is overlooked.
