Dr. Perry Umlauf is widely respected for his thoughtful, thorough approach to patient care and his unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality eye care to every patient he serves.
Dr. Umlauf earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Maryland before completing his Bachelor of Science in Visual Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. He then completed a hospital-based primary eye care residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he developed extensive experience in medical eye care and the management of complex ocular conditions. He currently serves on the Allied Health Medical Staff at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, providing inpatient consultations and emergency department eye care.
Dr. Umlauf practices comprehensive primary eye care with special interests in glaucoma and ocular disease management. He is particularly recognized for his expertise in prescribing specialty contact lenses for patients with keratoconus and other corneal conditions, helping patients achieve improved vision and comfort in complex clinical situations.
In recognition of his leadership and contributions to the profession, Dr. Umlauf was honored in 2009 with the Pennsylvania Optometrist of the Year Award, the highest distinction awarded by his peers in the state. In 2023, he received the prestigious George Gottschalk Jr. Memorial Award from the Pennsylvania Optometric Association, recognizing his long-standing dedication, service, and leadership within the profession. He has been deeply involved with the Pennsylvania Optometric Association for many years, serving in a variety of leadership and professional roles that reflect his commitment to advancing the profession and supporting high standards of patient care across the Commonwealth. He currently serves as Secretary of the Pennsylvania State Board of Optometry.
Dr. Umlauf has long-standing ties to the Lebanon County community, having practiced for 21 years alongside ophthalmologist Dr. Albert Alley in Lebanon. Earlier in his career, he also participated in international vision missions with World Blindness Outreach and community vision screenings with the Lebanon Lions Club, reflecting a long-standing commitment to service and outreach.
Dr. Umlauf is passionate about patient-centered care and is dedicated to helping patients maintain both visual clarity and long-term eye health. He currently sees patients in the Wyomissing and Myerstown offices, where he continues to provide skilled and comprehensive optometric care.
Outside of the office, Dr. Umlauf is an avid golfer and world traveler who enjoys exploring new destinations with his wife, Fran.
